Israeli citizens observe second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of people who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source said the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- After-conflict governance of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's memorial area earlier, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator a participant explained: "We must do every compromise needed for the abducted to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of the gathering, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the evening arrives, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional victims had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the south region, medical staff reported.
